The Best Spa Facilities at Sea
Spas and wellness facilities are a huge part of hospitality on board. With a long tradition behind it – one of the oldest cruise ships still in service, Cruise & Maritime Astoria, features a spa on board, with sauna, steam room, onboard hairdresser, and treatment room for facials and massages – it is clear that these facilities are an important part of cruising. Below we’ll take a look at some of the best spa facilities you can find at sea…
Viking Ocean Cruises – LivNordic Spa
Spa brand Raison d’Etre first implemented its LivNordic spas into Viking Ocean Cruise Ships in 2014. Drawing upon the holistic wellness philosophy of Nordic culture, the LivNordic spa offers guests a true Hygge spa experience. Designed by Cruise Ship Interiors Expo exhibitors SMC Design, the spa features Scandinavian Fire and Ice treatments, in the form of traditional Norwegian saunas and steam rooms, and the first ever ice grotto at sea – situated closely enough to allow guests to go quickly from one to the other. Going from one to the other and stimulates your circulatory system and follows a centuries-old Nordic tradition.
Cunard – Mareel Spa
Available on Cunard Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria, Mareel Wellness and Beauty takes the cruiser to a ‘sanctuary of relaxation’, taking inspiration from the oceans and indulging the mind, body, and soul. Within the Aqua Therapy Centre, guests can find a unique water environment providing alternative facilities, including a Thermal Suite, Hydrotherapy Pool, and Relaxation Area. Treatments at the Aqua Therapy Centre use the power of moving water and temperature variations to provide relief for muscles and joints, and promote deep relaxation. The Mareel Spa also features a Finnish Sauna, complete with aromatic Nordic cedar and heated by a hidden stove; Sensory Showers, infused with exotic natural aromas; and a large range of massages, beauty treatments and other body treatments. As well as all of this, Mareel is a laptop and mobile phone-free zone – aiding guests in resting and relaxing, away from the demands of the digital world.
Virgin Voyages Redemption Spa
The Cruise Ship Hospitality Expo team were invited to visit the Redemption Spa on board Virgin Voyages’ Scarlet Lady during a VIP tour in Dover – check out our write up from that here.
While the spa stuck to a more reserved décor and palette than the rest of the ship, soft marble curves in conjunction with a broken glass motif set off a thoroughly relaxing atmosphere under the hidden mood lighting. Featuring a sauna, salt room, mudroom, and massage facilities, with porthole views of the sea, the Redemption Spa has all bases covered, sufficient for a recovery from the previous night’s onboard debauchery.
Blue World Voyages Spa and Wellness deck
A newcomer to the cruise game, Blue World Voyages are breaking into the industry with a bold idea – to set sail with the first cruise ship dedicated to health, fitness, sport, and wellbeing, with ‘Active Lifestyle Cruising’. On board, spa and wellness facilities are treated to an entire deck – making it the largest spa facility per passenger at sea. Designed by former Spa Director for Canyon Ranch Resort Diane Trieste, the spa and wellness deck features a sauna, steam room, facials, massage rooms (indoors and outdoors), manicures, pedicures and a full service salon – as well as an ocean view solarium and therapy pool, a meditation room, mud bath, and a range of alternative treatments.
Sailing on its first voyages in 2021, the new Blue World Voyages ship will carry 525 passengers. 100 of these will be suite owners, in a residency scheme pioneered by the brand. The vessel will also feature an entire deck for sports, including a whole host of gym equipment, yoga studios, and sports simulators.
Spas and wellness facilities on board have come a long way since Astoria – with an ever-expanding range of treatments available, it was only a matter of time until a cruise ship dedicated an entire deck to the pastime – as Blue World now have. Whether you use the spa as a recovery tool, as a fitness enhancer, or as part of your beauty routine, cruise ships have the facilities for you.
Do you create spa products that should be on cruise ships? Make sure you’re exhibiting at Cruise Ship Hospitality Expo, June 8 – 9 2021, Miami Beach Convention Center!
