The Best Food Themed Cruises
Culinary offerings are a key focus for cruise lines. From creating a ‘gastronomic experience‘ on board MSC ships, to elevating al fresco dining venues, to redefining haute cuisine, cruise lines are constantly adapting and innovating their food offerings to appeal to cruisers. This trend is so prevalent that many lines have gone down the route of themed cruises, offering an all-out, ubiquitous foodie experience. In this article we take a look at some of the best food-themed cruises on offer.
Culinary Cruises from Celebrity
Celebrity Cruises’ latest culinary endeavour mixes onboard dining events with menus developed by Daniel Boulud, Celebrity’s new Global Culinary Brand Ambassador. Routed in French tradition, Boulud is known for his soulful cooking style, and will be joining Michelin-star chef Cornelius Gallagher to deliver a new culinary experience on Celebrity ships. Onboard dining events include food and wine parings, mixology, and tasting sessions.
Crystal Cruises’ Wine & Food Festival
Crystal Cruises curate a Wine & Food Festival on some of their itineraries. Known for their luxury offerings, Crystal’s ‘critically-acclaimed celebration of the culinary arts’ promises to attract top chefs, wine experts, and mixologists. Onboard activities include lectures from cruise and guest chefs, tastings, and classes.
Princess Cruises’ Culinary Stars
Princess Cruises have recently announced their Culinary Stars short ‘seacation’. The three day roundtrip from Southampton features three celebrity chefs – John Torode, presenter of BBC series Masterchef; Lottie Bedlow, Great British Bake Off contestant; and Michael Roux Jr, two-star Michelin chef and ex-presenter of Masterchef. The Culinary Stars cruise can be found on board Sky Princess, and launches September 10th 2021.
Rhine & Stein (& Wine on the Rhine) from TUI
Rhine and Stein is a seven-day beer-themed cruise from Tui River Cruises, sailing from Frankfurt to Amsterdam and back, visiting seven different ports. Along the way, cruisers can taste a traditional Kolsch in Cologne, try a bitterballen snack with beer in Amsterdam, pull their own pint in Arnhem, and make use of £120 of onshore credit. Rhine and Stein sails on board Tui Maya, which provides three meals and drinks for free as standard. A similar Tui itinerary focuses on Wine on the Rhine, upon which cruisers can see the German Wine Route in Speyer, sip Alsatian wine in Strasbourg, and visit a traditional wine house in Mainz.
P&O Cruises’ Food Heroes
P&O Cruises‘ Food Heroes are Marco Pierre White, British celebrity chef; Olly Smith, award-winning wine expert; and Eric Landlard, master pâtissier. In addition to designing menus for P&O ships, the Food Heroes provide culinary experiences on board along with the opportunity to meet them – perhaps for a glass of wine with Olly Smith in The Glass House, or afternoon tea with Eric Landlard in the Epicurean. P&O’s food heroes feature on board Iona, P&O’s newest vessel.
While no-sail orders were in force, P&O’s Food Heroes kept busy teaching viewers at home how to make a variety of recipes. In the below video Olly Smith teaches how to make a Mint Julep cocktail:
