Steripower is an exhibitor at Cruise Ship Hospitality Expo. Steripower are launching an exciting new product – a luggage sanitiser for use pre-embarkation in the cruise industry. In this guest article, Steripower Sales Director and Cruise Ship Hospitality Expo Advisory Board member Arno Ahrens describes the capabilities of the new product and details a recent case study at the Columbus Cruise Center in Bremerhaven, Germany. Read on to find out more…

Arno Ahrens – Starnberg, Germany, 13/04/21 – Steripower, known globally for being a market leader in disinfection devices, is presenting their newest innovation. The prototype for a complete disinfection of luggage will be put through its paces at the Columbus Cruise Center in Bremerhaven over the next few months. The device, which is based on UV technology, was developed by Steripower and can not only clean pieces of luggage, but also various goods before loading.

How does it work?

The object to be disinfected is first placed in the inlet of the roller conveyor. The light barrier at the inlet of the device detects the object and is then brought into the centre of the device. At the centre of the device is the disinfection unit, with a total of 1.33Kw UV-C burners emitting light at a wavelength of 256nm. The burners are attached to a rotating arm which moves around the object to ensure every square centimetre is irradiated evenly. The device also contains mirrors ensuring the light is focused on the surface of the case, in order to achieve the highest possible energy density.

Depending on the time the object remains in the disinfection chamber, a dose of up to 650 mJ/cm2 (millijoules per square centimetre) can be achieved. At approximately 25-30mJ/cm2, a variety of types of bacteria, such as Z. Streptococcus Aureus, E. Coli, and Lactobacillales are killed. Additionally, spore-forming bacteria, which up until this point could not be cracked with chemical disinfectants, do not remain unscathed. Viruses of the H classes, as well as reno- and corona-viruses are destroyed by a slightly higher dose.

In the standard setting, each object is subjected to 120mj/cm^2, allowing for the possibility of 1500 disinfected units per hour in future versions. When UV-C light is released in the 250nm range, the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) inevitably generates O3 (otherwise known as ozone). This harmful gas is removed from the disinfection chamber by two powerful fans and broken back down into O2 in a catalyst filter – thus also acting as an air purifier.
